The Department of Anesthesiology is specialized to provide the best talent and skills to patients. The department serves the anesthesiology, pain, and critical care medicine needs for patients admitted to affiliating hospitals. Our residency program provides in-depth and hands-on learning opportunities in both clinical and research areas. Residents spend most of their time at Kowsar Hospital, a teaching, not-for-profit, 540-bed hospital with well-equipped ICU wards. The curriculum requires the residents to get familiar with historical backgrounds of anesthesiology, airway management, advanced resuscitation measures, management of chronic pain and severely ill ICU patients. The department also cater educational programs for students of general medicine and anesthesia technology.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is specialized in critical care, acute trauma care, acute pain management, communication skills and disaster preparedness and response. Our residency educational program provides great opportunities for residents to visit a wide range of case patients. The curriculum includes clinical knowledge, required skills for diagnosis, decision making, patient treatment, and management of acute patients. The residents participate actively in diagnosis and management of patients in collaboration with other specialty departments in affiling teaching hospitals. The educational program is comprised of educational rounds, bedside medical teaching, workshops and classes, conferences and journal clubs as well as teaching practical and procedural skills. Senior medical students join us every month for their emergency rotations.

The Department of Internal has been a leader in the advancement of care, education, and research. It has been recognized as one of the largest clinical departments in Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences. The elite team of clinicians, investigators and educators aim to provide medical and educational services in general internal medicine and subspecialties such as Rheumatology, Pulmonary disease, Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Hematology and Oncology, Gastreenterology and Hepatology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Nephrology in Kowsar and Tohid teaching hospitals. The department provides outstanding residency program in general internal medicine promoting residents’ creativity and commitment through exemplary skills and attitudes in internal medicine. The department aims at training specialists who both offer high level care, diagnosis, evidence-based and scientific treatment for patients and are able to consider principles of medical ethics, professional commitment, comprehensive and community-based insight. The department caters a comprehensive educational program for senior and junior medical students in internship and externship levels. The department of internal medicine is proud to affiliate with Liver and Digestive Research Center as well as Lung Diseases and Allergy Research Center of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences.

The Department of Surgery is located in affiliating teaching hospitals. Our faculty members contribute extensively to core missions of the department: excellent clinical care, vibrant surgical skills, outstanding research productivity, and delivery of state-of-the-art educational programs covering M.D. and residency (specialty). The Department of Surgery is dedicated to provide quality care for patients requiring surgery in the region, as well as training qualified surgeons in various fields such as cancer, plastic, vascular, and breast surgery. Residents and medical students spend most of their time at Kowsar Hospital, a teaching, not-for-profit, 540-bed hospital with specialty and subspecialty surgery wards. The education curriculum includes obligatory monthly shifts, morning reports programs, conferences on mortality and morbidity, text review, case reports, rounds, tumor board and other educational programs of the department. Internal exams, annual promotion exams, and intradepartmental evaluations are the assessment criteria for the residents in each academic year. Finally, in the fourth academic year, the residents will participate in certification and graduation certification exams.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology aims to offer world-class obstetrics and gynecologic care. The elite team of the department is currently engaged in running post-graduate and under-graduate educational programs in Besat teaching hospital. The residency program trains residents relying on the facilities and equipment necessary for diagnostic, therapeutic, research, and educational activities. Moreover, the educational program of the department cater theoretical and clinical learning opportunities for medical students.

The Department with an elite team of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists, is known as one of the largest clinical departments in Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences. The department is committed to advancing health of infants, children, and adolescents through innovative medical care, research, education, training, and advocacy. The department runs a residency program, one of the most recognized in the country, as well as educational programs for medical students in under-graduate level in Besat teaching Hospital. Pediatrics wards of Besat Hospital include: Neonatal Ward, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), General Ward for Pediatrics, Subspecialty Ward for Infectious Diseases, Nephrology Ward, Oncology Ward, Pediatric Intensive Care Ward (PICU) and Pediatric Emergency Ward. The educational programs of the department comprises broad-based training in general pediatrics and pediatric care within a variety of ambulatory, inpatient and community settings.

Qods Teaching Hospital is a single-specialty hospital devoted to psychiatric diseases, hosts the department of psychiatry. The department of psychiatry is proud to offer home visit service to psychiatric patients within Kurdistan Province. The residency program of the department, among the top programs of the country, comprises a comprehensive and broad-based education in clinical psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. The department cater a curriculum organized to present a body of knowledge in psychiatry as well as clinical exercises and experiences providing clinical expertise in evaluation of a wide range of psychiatrically ill patients. A comprehensive educational program is also offered to undergraduate medical students. The department collaborates actively with Neurosciences Research Center and Social Determinants of Health Research Center of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences.
